India’s 77th Republic Day Parade 2026 Rehearsals: Tradition Meets Cutting-Edge Tech at Kartavya Path

New Delhi is buzzing with patriotic fervor as rehearsals for the 77th Republic Day Parade 2026 unfold at Kartavya Path, blending India’s rich military heritage with groundbreaking indigenous innovations. Scheduled for January 26, 2026, this grand celebration marks the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram while championing Aatmanirbhar Bharat through a display of self-reliant defense capabilities.

The rehearsals have gone viral, showcasing the Indian Army’s precision drills alongside futuristic elements. A major highlight is the debut of the Bhairav Light Commando Battalion (also known as Bhairav Commandos), a newly raised elite unit formed to operate in extreme terrains and high-altitude borders. Trained for rapid deployment, drone integration, and agile warfare, this light infantry force bridges traditional infantry and special operations, symbolizing India’s evolving defense strategy.

The parade introduces a first-ever phased battle array formation, simulating real combat scenarios. It begins with reconnaissance assets like battlefield surveillance radars (BFSR) and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), followed by main battle tanks (T-90, Arjun), infantry combat vehicles (BMP-II), missile systems (NAMIS-II Nag, BrahMos), artillery (Dhanush, ATAGS), air defense (Akash, MRSAM), Drone Shakti units, robotic mules (unmanned ground vehicles), and advanced rifle-mounted robotic dogs. These quadruped systems, equipped for surveillance and combat roles, highlight India’s push toward unmanned and autonomous technologies.

Adding a unique traditional touch, the animal contingent makes a striking appearance for the first time, featuring Zanskar ponies, double-humped Bactrian camels, indigenous military dogs (Mudhol Hound, Rampur Hound, Chippiparai, Kombai, Rajapalayam), and raptor eagles. This display underscores the vital role animals continue to play in logistics and operations in challenging terrains.

Marching contingents include elite regiments like Scouts, Rajput, Assam, JAK LI, Artillery, and Ladakh Scouts, performing in the dynamic ‘Uncha Kadam’ style. The Indian Navy and Air Force add disciplined formations, while cultural vibrancy shines through with regiments syncing marches to Bollywood tunes during practice.

A historic diplomatic milestone elevates this year’s event: European Union leaders serve as chief guests for the first time. European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will grace the parade on January 26, during their state visit from January 25-27, 2026. They will co-chair the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi on January 27 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on deepening ties in trade, defense, technology, and advancing the long-pending bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The full parade promises 18 marching contingents, 13 bands, 30 tableaux (from states, UTs, ministries, and services), a spectacular flypast with 29 aircraft (Rafale, Su-30MKI, MiG-29, Apache, LCH Prachand), and a special performance by 2,500 artistes honoring Vande Mataram. Oscar-winner MM Keeravani has composed the music for this grand spectacle.

As foggy winter mornings give way to disciplined drills, the 77th Republic Day 2026 rehearsals embody India’s unbreakable spirit—honoring tradition while embracing innovation for a stronger, self-reliant future.
