Mahavir Jayanti 2026: Date & Significance

India is celebrating Mahavir Jayanti 2026 marking the 2624th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism. Also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, this auspicious festival is observed with great devotion by the Jain community across the country and is a public holiday in several states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and others.
The festival falls on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar.
Who Was Lord Mahavira?
Lord Mahavira (also called Vardhamana) was born in 599 BCE in Kundagram (near Vaishali, Bihar) to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. At the age of 30, he renounced worldly life and undertook severe penance for 12 years. After attaining Kevala Jnana (omniscience), he preached the path of spiritual liberation for the next 30 years until he attained Nirvana at the age of 72 in Pavapuri.
Mahavira revitalized Jainism and established its core principles that continue to guide millions even today.
Significance of Mahavir Jayanti
Mahavir Jayanti is not just a celebration of birth but a powerful reminder of Lord Mahavira’s timeless teachings of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-possession) — the five great vows (Pancha Mahavratas).
In today’s world of conflict and materialism, these principles promote peace, compassion, ethical living, and environmental harmony. The festival inspires people to practise self-discipline, charity, and non-violence in daily life.
How Mahavir Jayanti is Celebrated
Jain temples and communities across India celebrate the day with devotion and simplicity:
- Rath Yatra & Processions: Grand processions carry the idol of Lord Mahavira on beautifully decorated chariots through the streets.
- Abhisheka: Ritual bathing of the Lord’s idol with milk, saffron water, and rose water.
- Puja & Prayers: Special prayers, bhajans, and discourses on Mahavira’s life and teachings.
- Charity & Seva: Jains perform acts of kindness, donate to the needy, distribute clothes and food (strictly vegetarian and Jain-compliant), and organise blood donation camps.
- Fasting: Many devotees observe a full-day fast or consume only one meal.
- Cultural Programs: Lectures, storytelling sessions for children, and exhibitions on Jain philosophy are organised in temples and community halls.
Major celebrations take place at important Jain pilgrimage sites such as Pavapuri (Bihar), Palitana (Gujarat), Shravanabelagola (Karnataka), and Ranakpur (Rajasthan).
Lord Mahavira’s Key Teachings for Modern Life
- Ahimsa Parmo Dharma – Non-violence is the highest religion.
- Live simply and avoid excess attachment to material things.
- Speak the truth and practise honesty in all dealings.
- Respect all living beings — from humans to the smallest insects.
- Control desires and practise self-restraint for inner peace.
These values remain highly relevant in 2026, encouraging harmony in society and sustainable living.
On this sacred occasion, BharatTone extends warm greetings to the entire Jain community and all Indians. May the teachings of Lord Mahavira inspire us towards a more compassionate, peaceful, and ethical society.
