Seattle Agrees to Pay ₹262 Crore to Family of Indian Student Jaahnavi Kandula Killed by Speeding US Police Officer

In a major development that has captured attention across India and the Indian diaspora, the city of Seattle in the United States has agreed to a $29 million settlement—equivalent to approximately ₹262 crore—with the family of Jaahnavi Kandula. The 23-year-old graduate student from Andhra Pradesh was tragically killed in January 2023 after being struck by a speeding Seattle police vehicle.

The settlement, announced on February 11, 2026, resolves a wrongful death lawsuit that originally sought over $110 million. It comes more than three years after the incident and has once again highlighted differences in accountability and compensation between the US legal system and cases of negligence in India.

The Incident: A Speeding Officer Ends a Young Life

On January 23, 2023, Jaahnavi Kandula was lawfully crossing a street in Seattle’s South Lake Union area at a marked crosswalk. At the same time, Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave was rushing to respond to a reported drug overdose call.

Driving at speeds reaching 74 mph (119 km/h) in a 25 mph (40 km/h) zone, Dave’s patrol car struck Kandula with devastating force. She was thrown nearly 138 feet (42 meters) and suffered fatal injuries. Despite being taken to Harborview Medical Center, she passed away shortly after.

Investigations showed that while emergency lights and siren were used at some points, the excessive speed violated police department protocols and was the main factor in the fatal crash.

Outrage Over Callous Police Union Remarks

The case drew massive public anger in September 2023 when bodycam audio was released. In the recording, Seattle Police Officers Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer is heard laughing during a conversation about the incident.

Auderer reportedly said Kandula had “limited value” because she was “26 anyway” (she was actually 23) and jokingly suggested the city could settle by “writing a check” for just $11,000. The insensitive comments sparked protests in Seattle and strong condemnation in India, with many asking: “Who has unlimited value? Jaahnavi Kandula!”

Legal Fight and the $29 Million Settlement

Kandula’s family filed a civil lawsuit in September 2024 against the City of Seattle, Officer Dave, and the police department. The suit accused the city of negligence in training, policy, hiring, and supervision.

After prolonged court proceedings, the city agreed to pay $29 million without admitting fault. Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans stated:

“Jaahnavi Kandula’s death was heartbreaking, and the city hopes this financial settlement brings some sense of closure to the Kandula family. Jaahnavi Kandula’s life mattered. It mattered to her family, her friends and to our community.”

Around $20 million of the amount is expected to come from the city’s insurance, with the rest from city funds. This makes it one of the largest such settlements in Seattle’s history.

What Happened to the Officers?

  • Officer Kevin Dave — Initially charged only with misdemeanor negligent driving, he paid a $5,000 fine in late 2024 and avoided jail. In 2025, he was fired by Interim Police Chief Sue Rahr for breaching department rules and endangering lives.
  • Daniel Auderer — The union leader whose remarks caused outrage was also terminated by the department in 2025.

Both firings followed sustained public and media pressure.

Why This Case Strikes a Chord in India

For millions of Indians—whether students studying abroad, professionals working overseas, or families back home—this settlement stands out sharply against many preventable deaths in India due to road accidents, poor infrastructure, medical negligence, or police actions that often result in little or no compensation.

Social media discussions frequently compare the swift and substantial justice in the US to similar tragedies in India where families struggle for years with minimal redress. While no amount can replace a lost life, the Kandula case shows what strong legal systems and persistent advocacy can achieve.

Jaahnavi was pursuing a master’s in information systems at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus—a dream shared by thousands of young Indians every year.

A Reminder for the Indian Community

This heartbreaking story serves as both a caution and an inspiration. It reminds Indian students and NRIs to stay aware of local safety rules while abroad. At the same time, it prompts reflection on improving accountability and support systems here in Bharat.

BharatTone will keep tracking this story and other issues affecting Indians globally.
