Russia Accuses Ukraine of Drone Attack on Putin’s Valdai Residence; PM Modi Urges Restraint

In a major escalation amid fragile peace efforts, Russia has accused Ukraine of launching a massive drone assault on President Vladimir Putin’s official residence in the Novgorod region’s Valdai complex, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express deep concern and call for restraint to safeguard diplomatic progress.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on December 29 that Ukraine deployed 91 long-range drones targeting the fortified presidential state residence—known as the Valdai palace on Lake Valdai—overnight from December 28-29. According to Lavrov, all drones were intercepted by Russian air defenses, with no damage or casualties reported. He termed the alleged attack “state terrorism” and said Moscow would revise its stance in U.S.-mediated peace negotiations while reserving the right to respond.

The Russian claim comes immediately after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on December 28, where both leaders reported positive discussions on security guarantees and a potential peace framework. Kremlin sources said Putin briefed Trump on the alleged incident during a December 29 phone call, leaving the U.S. leader “shocked” and “outraged.” Trump later expressed anger over the report but noted it remained unconfirmed by U.S. intelligence.

Zelenskyy strongly denied the accusations, calling them “complete lies” aimed at justifying Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and derailing diplomatic gains. “Russia is fabricating this to undermine peace efforts,” Zelenskyy said, reiterating that Ukraine targets only military objectives.

No independent evidence, such as satellite imagery or debris, has been presented to verify Russia’s claims. Notably, the Russian Defense Ministry’s reports of downed drones nationwide varied, mentioning fewer in the Novgorod area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced alarm over the developments, stating: “We are deeply concerned by reports of an attack on the residence of the President of Russia. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them.”

India has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the nearly four-year Russia-Ukraine conflict, maintaining balanced ties with both nations.

The unverified allegations risk complicating U.S.-led talks aimed at a ceasefire, as battlefield hostilities continue.
