India Shines at IMO 2025: Secures 7th Rank with 3 Golds and Record Score

Sunshine Coast, Australia, July 21, 2025 – India has achieved a stellar performance at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, securing the 7th position among 110 participating countries. The six-member Indian team clinched three gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze, setting a new national record with a cumulative score of 193 out of 252, the highest in India’s 35-year history at the IMO. This remarkable feat, celebrated at the event held in Sunshine Coast, Australia, underscores Bharat’s rising prowess in global mathematical competitions.
A Historic Achievement for Team India
India’s exceptional performance at IMO 2025 marks the third time the country has secured the 7th rank globally, matching its achievements in 1998 and 2001. The team’s haul of three gold medals is a rare milestone, previously accomplished only in 1998. The gold medalists, Kanav Talwar, Aarav Gupta, and Adhitya Mangudy, along with silver medalists Abel George Mathew and Aadish Jain, and bronze medalist Archit Manas, showcased extraordinary talent in solving complex problems across algebra, combinatorics, number theory, and geometry.
The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, coordinated the selection and training of the Indian team. The rigorous preparation at the IMO Training Camp, held at the Chennai Mathematical Institute, played a pivotal role in this success. Mentors, including Professor Shanta Laishram, Dr. Mainak Ghosh, Atul Shatavart Nadig, and Dr. Rijul Saini, guided the team to excel in this prestigious global competition.
India’s Rising Dominance in STEM Olympiads
India’s consistent improvement at the IMO reflects its growing dominance in STEM fields. Since 2019, Indian students have secured 12 gold medals, with nine in the last three years (2023–2025), highlighting a golden era for mathematical talent in Bharat. In 2024, India achieved its best-ever rank of 4th with four gold medals, and this year’s performance further cements its place among the world’s mathematical elite, trailing only powerhouses like China, the USA, and South Korea.
The IMO, the world’s most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students, challenges participants with six advanced problems over two days. India’s record-breaking score of 193 points demonstrates the team’s ability to tackle these intellectually demanding tasks with precision and creativity.
Voices of Pride and Inspiration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team, stating, “This feat will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular.” The achievement has sparked widespread celebration across Bharat, with netizens on X praising the young mathletes for their brilliance and dedication. Posts on X hailed the team’s success as a “proud moment for India” and a testament to the country’s rising STEM talent.
A Bright Future for Indian Mathematics
The success at IMO 2025 is a beacon of inspiration for young minds across Bharat. The HBCSE’s rigorous selection process, starting with the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) and culminating in the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC), ensures that India’s brightest talents are nurtured to compete on the global stage. This achievement not only elevates India’s global standing but also encourages students to pursue excellence in mathematics and STEM disciplines.
