India April 2026: Modi Leads Amid Hormuz Crisis

As the first rays of April 2026 illuminated the diverse landscapes of Bharat, the nation demonstrated its characteristic resilience and strategic foresight amid global turbulence. The escalating conflict in West Asia, particularly disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, tested India’s energy security, yet under the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country responded with calm diplomacy, proactive measures to protect citizens, and a firm commitment to national interests. At the same moment, Bharat embarked on a monumental exercise — the launch of its first fully digital Census 2027 — marking a transformative step toward data-driven governance and Viksit Bharat.
This week showcased Bharat’s ability to navigate international storms while accelerating its journey of reform, self-reliance, and inclusive development.
Hormuz Crisis: India Prioritises Energy Security and Citizen Safety
The ongoing US-Iran conflict has severely impacted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy supplies. As the world’s third-largest oil importer, India — which sources a significant portion of its crude and LNG through this route — faced potential challenges to fuel availability and price stability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a special meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation and coordinate ministerial actions. The government swiftly cut central excise duties on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre to shield ordinary citizens from price shocks, ensuring that the common man does not bear the burden of global volatility. Additional measures were taken to secure domestic stocks of petroleum products, LPG, and power supply.
India has been the only country to lose mariners in incidents linked to the conflict in the Gulf, prompting strong diplomatic engagement. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Foreign Secretary participated in UK-convened talks with over 40 nations to restore freedom of navigation. At the same time, direct channels with Iranian authorities yielded positive outcomes, with several Indian vessels, including LPG tankers, receiving safe passage. Iran publicly reassured “Indian friends” of their security.
PM Modi has consistently described disruptions to international waterways as “unacceptable” and emphasised the need for de-escalation to protect global trade and energy flows. Through balanced diplomacy — engaging both Iran for safe transit and international partners for collective solutions — Bharat has protected its strategic autonomy while safeguarding economic interests. The rupee faced some pressure, but proactive steps helped contain inflation risks and maintain supply chains.
Historic Digital Census 2027: A New Chapter in Nation-Building
In a landmark moment for democratic governance, India launched the first phase of Census 2027 on April 1, 2026 — the world’s largest and most ambitious population enumeration exercise, conducted entirely in digital mode for the first time.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself completed his self-enumeration, setting an example for the nation and urging every citizen to participate enthusiastically. The first phase (House Listing and Housing Census) will run until September 2026, using mobile apps and online portals for greater accuracy, transparency, and speed. For the first time in nearly a century, the census will include comprehensive caste enumeration across communities, alongside detailed socio-economic and housing data.
This digital revolution in data collection will empower better policy planning, resource allocation, welfare schemes, and electoral reforms. Officials have assured that many datasets could be released within the same year, thanks to real-time digital capture. The exercise reflects Bharat’s commitment to evidence-based development and inclusive growth in the Amrit Kaal.
PM Modi Reiterates Commitment to the Reform Express
Amid these challenges, Prime Minister Modi continued to inspire confidence by highlighting India’s progress on the Reform Express. In recent addresses, he emphasised that the government remains focused on “Reform, Perform, Transform,” with massive capital expenditure on infrastructure, manufacturing, railways, highways, and ports.
The Union Budget 2026-27 has provided fresh momentum to this journey, aiming to position Bharat as the world’s third-largest economy. Women-led development, defence modernisation, ease of doing business, and technology-driven governance remain key pillars. Despite external headwinds from the West Asia conflict, the government projects steady GDP growth while prioritising Atmanirbhar Bharat and long-term economic resilience.
In internal security, a positive development saw 44 Maoists surrender in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, with the area now declared Maoist-free — another milestone in the fight against Left-Wing Extremism.
Bharat’s Global Stance and Outlook
This week reinforced India’s image as a responsible global player: criticising attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure, advocating freedom of navigation, and protecting its diaspora and economic interests without being drawn into conflicts.
As the US signals that the Iran campaign may conclude in the coming weeks, Bharat remains vigilant. Diversification of energy sources, increased focus on renewables and domestic production, and continued diplomatic engagement will shape the road ahead.
For 140 crore Indians, the message is clear — under strong and visionary leadership, Bharat will not only weather global storms but emerge stronger, more self-reliant, and firmly on track toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.
