Election Commission Grants Whistle Symbol to Vijay’s TVK for 2026 Tamil Nadu Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially allotted the ‘Whistle’ symbol to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party founded by popular Tamil actor Joseph Vijay (Thalapathy Vijay), for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

This decision comes after TVK, a registered but unrecognised political party (RUPP) launched in February 2024, applied under the provisions of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. The party submitted its application in November 2025, including financial reports for 2024-25 and a list of preferred symbols. The ‘Whistle’ was among the top choices, drawing from Vijay’s iconic association with the symbol in his 2019 blockbuster film Bigil, where it served as a rallying cry for unity and motivation.

The ECI’s allotment allows TVK to use the ‘Whistle’ as a common symbol across all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, simplifying voter identification for the party’s independent electoral debut. Polls are anticipated in April or May 2026. Notably, the ECI also allotted the ‘Battery Torch’ (or ‘Torch Light’) symbol to actor Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) in the same announcement.

The move has sparked celebrations among TVK supporters and cadres, with many highlighting the symbolic resonance of the whistle—long linked to Vijay’s fan clubs and on-screen persona—as a powerful tool for grassroots mobilization. Actor Arun Vijay, among other celebrities backing TVK, reportedly welcomed the decision, noting its potential to amplify the party’s message of change and good governance in Tamil Nadu.

TVK has positioned itself as a fresh alternative in the state’s politics, with Vijay emphasizing youth empowerment, anti-corruption measures, and inclusive development. The party plans to contest all seats independently, without alliances with major players like DMK or AIADMK.

This development marks a key milestone for Vijay’s political journey, providing a clear visual identity ahead of what promises to be a high-stakes contest in Tamil Nadu.
