Mizoram Government to Introduce Monthly Hindi Speaking Day in All Schools to Enhance Proficiency

Aizawl, January 30, 2026 – In a significant move to promote linguistic integration and improve communication skills among students, the Mizoram government has announced the introduction of a dedicated Hindi Speaking Day in all schools across the state. The initiative, aimed at boosting proficiency in spoken Hindi, will be observed once a month starting from the upcoming academic sessions.

School Education Minister Vanlalthlana made the announcement during a press conference in Aizawl, highlighting the importance of Hindi in bridging regional language barriers. “Given the importance of spoken Hindi, the government will notify Hindi-speaking days for all schools. Hindi will be used during school recesses once a month,” the minister stated.

The program will be implemented under the direct supervision of the state School Education Department. On the designated day each month, students and teachers will be encouraged to converse exclusively in Hindi, particularly during school recesses and informal interactions. To support effective implementation, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will prepare specialized spoken Hindi books. Hindi teachers will receive targeted training, while special sessions will be organized for students and educators who are not fluent in the language.

This step addresses a longstanding challenge in Mizoram, where Mizo and English serve as the primary official languages, and Hindi is rarely used due to the state’s demographic composition and limited exposure to Hindi-speaking communities. Many Mizo residents face difficulties communicating in Hindi-dominant regions of India, impacting opportunities for higher education, employment, and mobility. The initiative is expected to equip students with better Hindi skills, enhancing their prospects in a multilingual national context.

The Hindi Speaking Day forms part of a broader overhaul of the state’s education system, announced alongside other reforms such as reverting to a January–December academic calendar for most classes from the 2027–28 session, discontinuing divisions and ranks in board exam results, mandating Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) clearance for government teachers, and introducing a Home Language Day in English-medium schools. The latter will allow students to communicate in their mother tongues during recesses once a week to preserve local languages amid growing reliance on English.

The decisions follow extensive consultations with teachers, parents, and organizations, reflecting the government’s commitment to quality education tailored to Mizoram’s unique geography, climate, and cultural needs.

Education officials emphasized that the move is not intended to replace local languages but to add a practical skill set. “The focus is on removing language barriers and preparing students for opportunities across India,” sources in the department noted.

The initiative has sparked discussions on social media and among education circles, with many viewing it as a positive step toward national unity while preserving regional identities. Implementation details, including the specific date for the monthly observance, are expected to be notified soon.

This development underscores ongoing efforts to align regional education policies with national goals, particularly in promoting India’s constitutional link language in diverse linguistic landscapes.
