Gandhinagar, December 31, 2025 – In a groundbreaking move to position India as a global leader in artificial intelligence, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has granted in-principle approval for the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) at GIFT City. Set to commence operations from January 1, 2026, this initiative marks Gujarat as the first state in India to create an AI research organization under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Key Highlights of the Gujarat AI Research Center in GIFT City

  • Name and Structure: Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) will operate as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in GIFT City and be registered as a non-profit Section 8 company under the Companies Act, 2013.
  • Partnership: Tripartite collaboration involving the Government of Gujarat, Government of India, and the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) as the anchor private partner.
  • Funding: An estimated ₹300 crore budget over the first five years, with equal contributions (33.33%) from the state, central government, and private partners. IPA, representing 23 leading pharma companies like Cipla, Torrent Pharma, and Sun Pharma, will contribute ₹25 crore in 2025-26.
  • Focus Areas: Advanced AI research and development, creation of AI-based products and solutions, intellectual property generation, capacity building, policy research, and collaborations with academia, industry, startups, and government.
  • Infrastructure: Hybrid compute model integrating on-premise GPU infrastructure with national platforms like IndiaAI Cloud.
  • Alignment: Supports the Union Government’s India AI Mission and Gujarat’s AI Action Plan.
