Mumbai Unveils India’s First Musical Road Playing ‘Jai Ho’

Mumbai Unveils India's First Musical Road Playing 'Jai Ho'

Mumbai, February 11, 2026 — In a unique blend of engineering innovation and Bollywood flair, Mumbai has become home to India’s first “musical road” (also called a melody road). A 500-meter stretch on the northbound carriageway of the iconic Mumbai Coastal Road, between Nariman Point and Worli (just after exiting the underground tunnel near Worli), now plays the upbeat, Oscar-winning tune “Jai Ho” from the film Slumdog Millionaire as vehicles drive over it.

The feature was officially inaugurated today by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and others in attendance. Conceptualized by former MP Rahul Shewale and implemented by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the road uses specially designed rumble strips — precisely spaced grooves cut into the asphalt. When vehicles maintain a speed of 70-80 kmph (with the effect starting around 60 kmph in some reports), tire friction generates vibrations that produce the melody, clearly audible inside the car even with windows rolled up.

Here are some stunning views of the Mumbai Coastal Road, where this innovative musical stretch has been added:

Supporters hail it as a clever, fun way to encourage steady speeds, promote safer driving, and add a touch of joy to the commute — inspired by Japan’s melody roads, which have existed since 2008. This makes Mumbai’s installation only the fifth such road in the world.

However, critics have raised concerns about the project’s priorities, questioning the expenditure on a novelty feature amid Mumbai’s pressing issues like severe air pollution, overcrowded local trains, persistent traffic congestion, and inadequate footpaths for pedestrians. Social media has buzzed with light-hearted reactions too, with some users joking about alternative song choices like “Tere Mere Beach Mein” for a more “Mumbaikar” vibe.

Advance signboards have been installed to alert drivers, ensuring they know what to expect. Officials have hinted at potential expansions, with plans to add more patriotic or inspirational tunes if the initiative proves successful.

This quirky addition has already gone viral on social media, with drivers sharing their “Jai Ho” experiences — turning a routine drive into an unexpected musical moment! 🚗🎶
