Dr. Devi Shetty Applauds PM Modi’s Timely Warning on Antimicrobial Resistance Crisis
New Delhi – January 2, 2026 Bharat Tone
Renowned cardiac surgeon and founder of Narayana Health, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, has wholeheartedly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in his December 28, 2025, ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address. Dr. Shetty, drawing from over three decades of surgical experience, highlighted how rampant antibiotic misuse has rendered many drugs ineffective, posing a severe threat to post-operative care and patient safety across India.
In his radio broadcast, PM Modi referenced a recent Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report revealing that common antibiotics are increasingly failing against infections like pneumonia and urinary tract infections. He urged citizens to shun self-medication and the notion that “one pill cures all,” warning that indiscriminate use is fueling a national health crisis.
Speaking to ANI, Dr. Shetty welcomed the Prime Minister’s intervention, stating, “The problem is that infection can happen, but most of the common antibiotics we use today simply do not kill the bacteria. This happened because of the rampant abuse of antibiotics.” He explained that bacteria have developed resistance due to overconsumption, even for minor ailments like cold, cough, or fever.
Emphasizing the gravity, Dr. Shetty cautioned, “If you don’t believe me, in the near future, we will run out of all the antibiotics, and we will go back to the pre-penicillin era.” He appealed to the public: “Always avoid taking antibiotics if possible, and never take them without a doctor’s prescription.” He stressed avoiding even demanding antibiotics from physicians unnecessarily.
The ICMR report underscores rising resistance driven by factors such as self-medication, over-the-counter availability, and incomplete courses. Experts, including ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl and former AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria, have echoed PM Modi’s concerns, calling AMR one of India’s most pressing public health challenges.
Dr. Shetty’s endorsement reinforces the need for collective action—better enforcement of prescription norms, improved diagnostics, widespread education, and robust antimicrobial stewardship programs. As India strides towards Viksit Bharat, responsible antibiotic use is vital to safeguard future generations from untreatable infections.
PM Modi’s proactive leadership in highlighting this silent epidemic through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has been hailed as a pivotal step in mobilizing national awareness and action.
