Manchester United Co-Owner Avram Glazer Places Massive ₹16,303 Crore Bid for RCB – A Major IPL Crossover Moment!

In one of the biggest developments in Indian cricket this year, Avram Glazer, co-owner and executive co-chairman of English Premier League giants Manchester United, has entered the race to buy Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) with a staggering non-binding bid of $1.8 billion (approximately ₹16,303 crore).

Multiple reports, including from The State of Play and The Week, confirm that Glazer, through his New Orleans-based investment firm Lancer Capital, has submitted one of the highest offers among the nine parties interested in acquiring RCB from its current owner, United Spirits (a subsidiary of Diageo). Citigroup is handling the sale process.

RCB’s Golden Run Fuels Sky-High Valuation

The timing couldn’t be better for RCB fans. In 2025, the franchise finally ended its long wait for glory by winning the IPL title under Virat Kohli’s leadership. To top it off, RCB’s women’s team also lifted the Women’s Premier League (WPL) trophy in the same year — making it a historic double triumph.

This on-field success has dramatically increased the team’s commercial value. When new IPL teams were sold in 2021 (Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans at around $940 million each), franchise prices were already soaring. With RCB’s recent championships, passionate fanbase (the famous “12th Man Army”), and massive brand equity, industry experts now estimate the franchise could fetch close to $2 billion in a full sale.

Glazer’s ₹16,303 crore bid sits right at the upper end of that range — nearly double the 2021 benchmark — and has positioned him as one of the frontrunners.

Glazers’ Long Interest in Indian Cricket

This isn’t the Glazer family’s first attempt to enter the IPL. Back in 2021, during the league’s expansion round, they bid for one of the two new teams but lost out to RPSG Group (Lucknow Super Giants) and CVC Capital (Gujarat Titans).

Undeterred, the Glazers have stayed active in T20 cricket. They already own the Desert Vipers franchise in the UAE’s ILT20 league. Avram Glazer is personally leading the renewed push into the IPL, seeing it as a strategic opportunity in one of the world’s most commercially explosive sports properties.

The family was also reportedly in contention for Rajasthan Royals (another franchise up for sale), but BCCI rules prohibit any individual or group from owning more than one IPL team. Current indications suggest their strongest position is with RCB.

Top Contenders in the RCB Sale Race

RCB’s divestment has attracted some of India’s biggest business names and international investors. Other notable bidders include:

  • Dr. Ranjan Pai (Manipal Group), possibly in partnership with global funds like KKR or Temasek
  • Adar Poonawalla (Serum Institute of India)
  • JSW Group (Parth Jindal) — though they may need to exit their existing stake in Delhi Capitals
  • Adani Group
  • International PE firms such as EQT and Premji Invest
  • Several high-net-worth consortia

The Glazers’ offer has reportedly been shortlisted along with four others. The process is still in the non-binding phase — next steps include due diligence, binding offers, and final negotiations. A conclusion is expected sometime between late February and March 2026, well ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

What It Means for RCB Fans and Indian Cricket

If successful, a Glazer-led takeover would create one of the most high-profile cross-sport ownership stories in recent times — linking the global fanbases of Manchester United and RCB. It could bring enhanced international marketing, bigger sponsorship deals, better youth academies, and infrastructure upgrades at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

At the same time, some fans remain cautious due to the Glazers’ controversial ownership history at Manchester United, which has faced fan protests over debt, ticket prices, and management decisions.

Regardless of the outcome, the massive bids for RCB once again prove the IPL’s unmatched commercial power. With media rights deals in the billions and franchise values continuing to climb, the league remains the world’s most attractive sports investment destination.

Will Avram Glazer bring RCB to new global heights, or will an Indian consortium take control? The coming weeks will tell.
